If your B2B website is your main communication channel, one of your goals has to be to increase traffic to both your free and premium content. These channels might include things like SEO, SEA, blog posts, and social media. One channel that can have a major impact on both your brand authority and organic search results is referral traffic. But exactly is referral traffic and why is it so important to your customer acquisition strategy. In today's digital landscape, incorporating video chat as a part of your referral strategy can be a game-changer. By providing the option for potential customers to connect with your team through video chat, you can create a more personalized and interactive experience.


How is Referral Tracked?

Website traffic referrals are tracked and passed through the user’s browser via HTTP referrer. It identifies the user’s current location and where they came from. Once someone clicks a link on your website, the browser will send a request to your server. This request includes a data field regarding the last place the user has visited. Google Analytics will then capture this data, save it, and report it as a referral domain inside your source reports.

Social Referrals

Social media is the no brainer venue to generate referrals, but this avenue especially comes down to content. Increase social media referrals by constructing original quality content made for your audience. Your audience’s worthy likes and follows are spent on your brand, so give them the content they are searching for. Interesting content is one of the top three reasons why an audience will follow a brand on social media.

Increase Internal Linking

If you want your site to rank in search results, it’s going to need both external and internal links. Internal links are simply links that direct to another page on your site that is related to the topic at hand. This will increase context for your readers, and will hopefully keep them on your site for even longer. Additionally, internal links help organize your site for Google’s indexing.

Create Embeddable Tools or Calculator

This one is a little difficult and will require a lot of effort by your tech team but this is results guaranteed. When you create something that makes someone’s life easier then they are bound to use it or embed it on their website. Marc Prosser, the co-founder and managing partner of Marc Waring Ventures used this technique and created SBA Loan Calculator on his website Fit Small Business.

Promote in the Right Places

Essentially, the more highly trafficked a website is, and the more relevant it is to your industry, the better results you will get from promoting your site there. For example, if your website advertises gardening services, getting your website linked to from other gardening websites would help to ensure that it’s being exposed to people who are already interested in gardening.

Google Analytics

You can view your referral traffic on the Google Analytics console. You need to simply log in to your Analytics account and look under Acquisitions<All Traffic<Referrals for data on your referral traffic. The graph may show a particular month’s worth of website visitor data for a certain website. In addition, the table will display the domain names from which traffic is produced and directed to your site.
